I purchased The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers, by Jack Newman and Teresa Pitman, for a friend, and I read through some of it last night.  It only further reinforced my slightly obsessive idol worship of Dr. Newman.  He doesn’t just talk about latching and colic (although he does talk about them), but he addresses the Big Picture: the aggressive marketing tactics of formula companies, primarily Nestle, that have caused infant deaths in the developing world and turned the Western world into a bottle-fed culture; the “rules” and myths about breastfeeding that have become so pervasive — such as what you can or cannot eat while breastfeeding, or that the baby must eat every three hours for only 10 minutes at a time, or the baby must never fall asleep at the breast OMG — and often frustrate mothers into giving up; and the idea that breastfeeding is about more than just nutrition, it’s about closeness and bonding and comfort and love.

I love Dr. Newman.  I haven’t read the whole book, but so far, I highly recommend it, and I may have to purchase a few extra copies to keep on hand!

It goes by The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers in the US, and Dr. Jack Newman’s Guide to Breastfeeding in Canada. I don’t know what other names it may have! It arrived in the mail yesterday, and it has a lot of really great information. I recommend it even more now!
