The Goose has low iron. I’m bummed about it because I know that breastfed babies very rarely suffer from anemia. Their bodies have enough iron stored to last the first six months or so, and then, as long as they are eating a variety of healthful foods, they should be fine. He eats lots of beans and broccoli and peas and oatmeal and — well, you get the idea.
His iron is only slightly low, which is encouraging, but he’s on Fer-In-Sol supplements. My iron was low when I was pregnant, although I don’t know if that has any bearing on the situation. I’m going to stick with the supplements for a few months and then try to give him lots of iron-rich foods, served with a food that’s high in vitamin C, which helps the body to absorb iron. I’d like to get him off the supplement as soon as possible, because I’m told it can cause constipation, but the pediatrician isn’t going to check his iron level again until his 1-year visit, so I’ve got at least three months to wait. Yuck.
Has anyone else dealt with this? Any other tips or suggestions?
